Exhibition “The Empress Regnant – Wu Zetian and the Divine Capital of Luoyang” is inaugurated showcasing the inclusiveness and prosperity of the great Tang dynasty
MACAU, September 23 - In order to promote historical and cultural exchanges between Henan and Macao, and to leverage Macao’s role as a vital window for exchange and mutual learning between Chinese and Western civilisations, the exhibition “The Empress Regnant – Wu Zetian and the Divine Capital of Luoyang”, organised by the Cultural Affairs Bureau of the Macao Special Administrative Region Government and the Henan Provincial Administration of Cultural Heritage, and coordinated by the Macao Museum, Henan Museum, Longmen Grottoes Academy and Luoyang Museum, was inaugurated today (23 September) at the Mount Fortress Garden. The opening ceremony was officiated by the President of the Cultural Affairs Bureau, Leong Wai Man; the Deputy Director of the Henan Provincial Administration of Cultural Heritage, Zhang Huiming; the Deputy Director of the Luoyang Municipal Administration of Cultural Heritage, Wu Rongquan; the Director of the Security Department of Henan Museum, Liu Zhenjiang; and the representative of the Principal of Pui Ching Middle School and the Director of Academic Affairs of Pui Ching Middle School, Lam Kin Pong.
This exhibition features a total of 126 pieces/sets of precious artefacts collected from eight cultural and museum institutions in Henan Province, including the Henan Museum, Longmen Grottoes Academy, Luoyang Museum, Archaeology Institute of Luoyang, and Luoyang Museum of Ancient Tombs, Sui-Tang Dynasties Grand Canal Cultural Museum, Yanshi Museum and Xin’an County Museum. Among them, 21 pieces/sets of artefacts are first-class cultural relics, including the gold tablet of Wu Zetian’s pardon, a stone sculpture of a guardian figure, a standing statue of Tathagata, a painted pottery horse and a horse tamer, a three-colour glazed horse, and a bronze mirror with sea creatures and grape motifs. The exhibition is divided into five sections, presenting a comprehensive view of the prosperity of the Tang dynasty from different perspectives, including urban planning, philosophy and culture, social life, ritual and legal systems, and international exchanges. Multimedia interactive installations and an AI-themed photo booth are also set up on site, allowing the public to learn with ease about the culture, art and social landscape of the Tang Dynasty. A virtual reality exhibition will likewise be available on the Macao Museum website for online visitors.
To celebrate the Mid-Autumn Festival with the public, the Cultural Affairs Bureau launches the programme “Under the Clear Night Sky – Mid-Autumn Festival Special Event for the Public”. The opening hours of the Macao Museum and the Mount Fortress will be extended until 10:30pm on 25 September (Friday), and until 9pm on 26 and 27 September (Saturday and Sunday). During this period, Tang-themed decorations, a photo booth, and a pickleball experience zone will be set up at the Mount Fortress. Admission to the Macao Museum will be free during the extension period of opening hours.
The exhibition “The Empress Regnant – Wu Zetian and the Divine Capital of Luoyang” is held until 28 February 2027 and members of the public are welcome to visit. The Macao Museum is open daily from 10am to 6pm (last admission at 5:30pm), and is closed on Mondays. Admission is free for holders of the Macao Resident Identity Card, and the general public on Tuesdays and on the 15th of each month.
